Serial Number Marriage Certificate Ukl: A Guide to Ordering a Certified Copy

We hold records of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships that occurred in West Sussex since 1837. Our Record Office also holds a number of earlier records. You can find details in Record Office sources and collections.

If ordering by post, please confirm the number of certificates required and enclose a self-addressed envelope. Cheque or postal orders (in pounds sterling) should be made out to West Sussex County Council.

Please do not apply for copies of certificates before the event has been registered. Due to changes in marriage legislation, it may take longer than usual for records of religious ceremonies to be deposited at the Register Office, and for certificates to be available for purchase. We can provide copies of certificates dating back to 1945 for the Islington and City of London area (Islington Council Registrars also cover registrations for the City of London Corporation, which is the square mile at the heart of the financial centre in the city. See a map of the area). We may be able to go as far back as 1837, but not all certificates will be available due to damage to our records during the Second World War.

If you're applying for a marriage certificate for a recent ceremony at a church, then you must allow an additional 7 days for us to enter the details in the national system. This 7-day period starts on the day we receive the properly completed and signed schedule.

Before you order a certificate, you can search online (for free) on the Yorkshire Births, Marriages and Deaths (Yorkshire BMD) website. Although the indexes are not yet complete for all years and districts, the database will eventually cover Yorkshire births, deaths, and marriages for the years 1837 to 2010.

If the request is a marriage certificate then you must provide the exact place name of the register office or the name of the church. This is very important for the location of the entry. We are unable to process certificates that do not include this information.

If your marriage took place after 4 May 2021 in a religious building, we can only provide certificates once the marriage schedule or document has been returned to us to register the event. If we have not received this we will let you know so you may follow this up with the clergy or authorised person.

If there have been multiple name changes, you must provide documentation to prove the continuity of the names. For example, if the name on your primary document differs from your current name, you must provide additional documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption files) to show a link to your current name.

I need my birth & marriage certificates authenticated. What do I do?The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth is not located in the Office of Vital Records. After receiving your birth and/or marriage certificates, contact the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth at authentication@governor.virginia.gov or www.commonwealth.virginia.gov for more information about getting the proper authentication for your documents.

Unfortunately, the Office of Vital Records does not make corrections to marriage or divorce records. In order to correct these records you should contact the city or county circuit court that issued the marriage certificate. Once the correction is made with the court, they will forward a corrected certificate to our office for filing. The website for the city and county circuit courts is

This is a short guide to finding records of births, marriages and deaths of British citizens at sea (on British registered ships) or in other countries. These records could appear in a number of different places but your first port of call should be the General Register Office who, from the mid-19th century onwards, officially maintained the records. There was no obligation to keep records of births, marriages or deaths at sea before the General Register Office was established.

Search for images of registers of births, marriages and deaths at sea, 1854-1891 on British registered ships (BT 158, BT 159 and BT 160) among the non-parochial records on The Genealogist (). However, marriages on British registered ships were not legally valid and only a relatively small number of records for marriages at sea exist.

If you need an apostille for documents signed before a U.S. notary, or for U.S. vital records such as birth, death or marriage certificates, contact the Authentication or Legalization Department in the office of the Secretary of State in the relevant state.

For all marriages that occurred on or after June 1, 1999, you may request an electronic certified copy of your marriage record at no charge. Marriage records prior to June 1, 1999 are not compatible with the software that supports the free electronic certified copy option. Therefore, any marriage records prior to June 1, 1999 must be requested through one of the other four (4) options listed. Please note: Check with the agency requesting your marriage certificate to make sure they will accept this electronic certified copy. If not you will need to order one by the other methods.

A priority certificate service is available for a fee of 35 to include the cost of 1 certificate. If more than one of the same certificate is required on the priority service, the additional certificates will be charged at 11 each. If 2 different certificates are ordered at the same time and both are required on the priority service, for instance a marriage certificate and a birth certificate or birth certificates for 2 different people, then the fee will be 35 per document making a total of 70.

You can order any birth, death and marriage certificate registered in Scotland from 1855 to present date and civil partnerships registered in Scotland from 2004 to present date as long as you are able to provide all the details required. 2ff7e9595c
